Dear Parents,

Attached is the Home/School connection for this week which includes the weekly spelling words, vocabulary words and reading skill of the week. It is included in English, Spanish and Creole. It is in your child’s best intrest to download and review the document including spelling and vocabulary words throughout the week.

Congratulations to all students who were recognized at the honor roll assembly this afternoon!  Keep up the good work.  Students can earn the A, A/B or B honor with their academic grades as well as earning all 1s and 2s on the right side of the report card.  I hope to have even more students recognized for their outstanding effort and academics at the 3rd quarter honor roll assembly!

Math: Chapter 8 Math quizzes went home today.  The quiz was given Friday on comparing fractions.  Please review missed problems with your child and return the signed quiz ASAP.  Please remember that students will be tested on Ch. 8 in math at the end of this week.  Additionally, students will be given a multiplication fact test this week to ensure that they are studying their multiplication tables nightly.  Students will also take a math mid-term at the end of this week which includes all math taught thus far in 3rd grade.  Please take advantage of the math resources and links available on this website.

Reminder: Reading Across Broward forms (distributed at the beginning of the year and available in student planners) are due March 23, 2011.  Please finish up forms over spring break as they will need to be turned in shortly after we return.

Dear Parents,

Attached is the Home/School connection for this week which includes the weekly spelling words, vocabulary words and reading skill of the week.  It is included in English, Spanish and Creole.  It is in your child’s best intrest to download and review the document including spelling and vocabulary words throughout the week.

Additionally, we are beginning chapter 8 in Math this week.  This chapter continues on with fractions but takes the skills to a higher level with comparing fractions.  Please use the fractions resources under the links/resources tab to help your child with the homework at home.  Also, under links there is a direct link to the Go Math Reteach book which includes a tutorial of EVERY lesson taught in class.  This is a great resource to use if your child is having difficulty with the homework.  Students will be tested on Chapter 8 on Thursday, March 10.  On Friday, March 11th students will be given a cumulative mid-term math exam.  This test will include ALL math concepts learned this year, such as place value, graphing, multiplication, division and fractions.  Students can review for this test by using the above mentioned math resources or by revisiting the lessons in the Go Math Text Book.

Maternity Leave

Dear Parents,

I would like to take this opportunity to let you know what a pleasure it has been to get to know and teach your children this year.  As most of you know, I am expecting my second child at the end of March.  I will be starting my maternity leave on March 28, 2011.  I will return in the last week of school to finish out the school year with my wonderful students.

I am pleased to let you know that during my leave, Mrs. Bach has secured an excellent replacement teacher.  Ms. Jane Coffman will be covering for me for the duration of my leave. She is a former teacher and principal for Broward County Schools.  She is familiar with Challenger Elementary’s rules, policies and code of conduct.   We will discuss classroom curriculum, procedures and policies to help ensure that the transition is as smooth as possible.  She agrees that keeping things as similar as possible is best for all students and she will continue with my classroom practices and curriculum. She is familiar with all student needs.

I am very excited to have Ms. Coffman and I know the students will continue to flourish under her care. I plan on checking in with the class periodically (as much as a new baby will allow me to).  I thank you for your support this year and for letting me be a part of your child’s life.

Home/School Connection E-mails

Each week I have been and will be sending the family connection to the reading story we are working on this week. It includes the spelling words, vocabulary words (words to know) which will be tested on Friday, and the reading comprehension skill for the week. This is a great tool to use at home to review and enhance classroom instruction. If you do not have email access and would like a printed copy to use with your child please send a note in and I will do my best to send it home weekly.

Reminder about Planners

Be sure to check your child’s planner nightly. Be sure he/she is writing down all of the homework in the planner and that all homework is complete. Your signature in the planner indicates that you have reviewed your child’s homework for the evening. Students will be rewarded for completed homework and signed planners and likewise penalized for planners that are continuously unsigned. Thank you for your support.

Rules, Expectations, & Consequences

In an effort to help our classroom run more smoothly and maximize the educational opportunities of each child, our classroom behavior management plan has changed. Below are the new rules and expectations of the class. Now students are held accountable for which specific rule they do not follow.

Each rule is assigned a color. Students who do not follow a rule will put a colored card for the designated rule in their “pocket.”

  • 1 card = warning
  • 2 cards = loss of behavior point for the day
  • 3 cards = loss of behavior point for the day and a note home explaining that they must write broken rules 10 times each

You will know which rules your child did not follow based on the colors in the points calendar. Students who followed all
rules will have a “white” or colorless day on their calendar. Students who did not follow rules will color their squares will all of the colors that apply. Students are also rewarded for good behavior.

  • 20 points for the week = treasure box
  • 16 points = fun Friday activity

Please encourage your child to explain the rules to you and tell you how they can do their best. Please check your child’s points calendar tonight. It would be great if you could initial the square each night to indicate that you are aware of your child’s daily progress. Thank you for your continued support.

What is Fluency Homework?

Reading well is a key to success in school, on state and national tests, and in life in general. I would like to invite you to work with us in helping your child become a better reader. All you have to do is read with your child daily, like many of you have been doing already!

Each Monday, your child will receive a short reading homework assignment that asks you to listen to him/her read out loud. It is focusing on your child’s fluency. Fluency is the ability to read text accurately, smoothly, at an appropriate rate with expression. Have your child practice reading the story each night. The goal is to see an improvement in the number of words read correctly each time the passage is attempted. (They should read orally to you like they were talking in a conversation). On Thursdays the students should answer the comprehension check questions at the bottom of the page in a complete sentence.

Your child will have from MONDAY to FRIDAY to complete the assignment. They will get credit for doing the work (or lose HW points for not returning the assignment). The paper needs to be signed by you daily in order to be considered complete. Also, each week I will be listening to students read, checking for improvement in their fluency. Have your child keep the fluency assignment in their binder in the page protector that has been provided to them. They need to return it to school daily, as we use the assignment for a one-minute buddy time reading during the week.
